Prompted by some rally success, courtesy of “Quick Vic” at the 1966 Tour de Course and the fun fact that Porsche loves racing, the “road use” only 911 lasted two model years, Renn-version free, before Stuttgart’s finest (Namely Herr Huschke von Hanstein) commissioned what was to be, the iconic 911R. Porsche wanted to compete in the sub 2L GT FIA category, they knew that light and nimble were the key elements needed to get the job done and at those points, they shone. Getting the right amount of cars made to homologate the 911R… that wasn’t so shiny.

None of us get it right the 1st time, even Porsche.

However, through their youthful enthusiasm, they created the first factory race 911. Yes, before the mighty racing monikers of RSR, RS, S/T and T/R was the R and what a fascinating, zero compromises racecar it was.

The lightweighting process Porsche went through was comprehensive, to the point of exhaustive. I’m not even going to begin listing the specific modifications, but let me paraphrase for brevity’s sake; Lots of fibreglass, plastic, wood, holes drilled and magnesium used. The end result was a bit over 200Kg removed from the base 911S’s definitely not porky 1035KG. It’s criminal to sum up such a magnificent cars development in a few sentences, but there you go. Arrest me.

Porsche Motorsport’s efforts resulted in a car that weighed 820Kg and developed 210Hp. In this age of heavy, powerful cars, such a formula, in a non-assisted, skinny tyred 911 sounds heavenly. Don’t even get me started on the flat 6 screaming out the back. 10K tacho. Close ratio 5 speed. Quiet country road…. OK… I need a moment. Alone.

The major problem Porsche and now 911 enthusiasts had/have with the 1967 911R is that they needed 500 to homologate them, but only 23 were made and given their pure focus as race cars, they have mostly had ‘colourful’ careers. There’s always outliers, but a general rule of thumb is that end of motorsport era cars (Think when FIA swapped from Group 1 – 7, to Group A, B, C etc) have survival rates that are reasonable, but start of era cars, get kind of thrashed to death. Imagine if you will, a 911R morphing from R to TR, ST, RSR, 934 to 935. Not sure if any did the full stretch, but it is not an impossible scenario. So, if you can get a genuine, unsullied example of a 911R, you are paying an absolute bomb. But, so you should. What a freaking car!

Anyways, about the 911 we have for sale today: In about 1998, sometime closely after Porsche Australia’s 50th birthday party in Melbourne, Dr Ian Henderson approached our family with an offer to buy our Ex Alan Hamilton 1968 911 T/R. We were flattered, but declined. So he tried again, waited a while, then tried again. To his credit, the good Dr was a very focused person and if it’s any consolation, we still enjoy our TR to this day. Henderson then took his focus and applied it to creating the predecessor to our TR, the 911R you see in these images. Starting with a correct LHD 1966 build, MY 1967 911, other core 911R components, like a correct 901/22 1965 Magnesium engine housing and 901 gearbox were sourced. Key Melbourne (Which I must reluctantly admit, is the home of Porsche in Australia) tradesmen were employed to conduct a multi-year, comprehensive “racetoration” to create the exacting 911R replica we proudly have for sale. Binders and binders full of receipts tell the tale of a wealthy Porsche fanatics obsession, with creating a very correct replica of his dream car. Is this car a folly? Perhaps, but if you have read this far, then you and I both know that it’s a pretty freaking cool folly. Our kind of folly.

Anyways, the chappy who now owns the car, only wants genuine cars in his collection and this amazing creation needs a new home. Yes, the old cliché of you couldn’t build it for the $$ all that certainly applies, but you also couldn’t spend the time getting it sorted to such a level, without making some serious compromises to your lifestyle / family time etc etc. In short, the car is an absolute credit to Dr Ian and his contractors and whoever buys it is going to love it; It's 1967 911R correct, built and maintained by some of the best, sorted, CAMS logbooked and ready for it’s next adventure.
